Gr 1-5-This series shows different ways of applying science and technology to problem-solving, including the methods of professional engineers, how to find the best solutions based on observations and data, how machines are designed to meet the needs of everyday people, and how mistakes are an important part of the learning and innovation process. Two- or three-color photographs appear on each page, along with one or two blocks of text, making this series a good fit for second- and third-grade readers. Introductory questions are asked at the beginning of the text, which enhance critical thinking, concept retention, and visual and mathematical literacy skills. VERDICT School libraries that teach a STEM-heavy curriculum should consider this series as well as public libraries that serve large homeschooled populations.
