Grades 1-3 *Starred Review* Twelve incredible animals in danger of becoming extinct are explored in this informative and important text. Here young readers will learn the categories of extinction currently being used and what they mean for the animals listed within. Each of the 12 subjects receives a two-page spread with vibrant, realistic illustrations of the animal in its habitat, along with a descriptive paragraph that includes interesting facts (the whale shark, el tuburon ballena, never sleeps, and polar bears have two layers of fur). Each section also includes information on the habitat, on the extinction category, and the reasons each animal is in danger of extinction. The lively, conversational tone of the text will pull in young readers, who will undoubtedly be unable to put down the book as they explore the worlds of these wondrous endangered animals. Back matter includes additional information on why these animals are facing extinction, plus suggestions on what people can do to help them and other animals.
