(The Spire)

ebook

(The Spire is an important representative work of Golding. It is an excellent work which makes in-depth exploration on human belief and despair and mixes ideal and reality. Jocelin, Dean of Mother Mary Cathedral, truly felt the call of God who wanted him to build a 400-foot high spire for the glory of God. He thought naively that God would help him to build a spire reaching the heaven on the ground as long as he was "Pious" and had strong "Will". Of course, the result was a complete loss. In The Spire, Golding places human's hope of quest for ideal realm and reveals the actual living condition that the ideal would go bust after all; noble desires and ugly reality, struggle for good and evil desires interweave with each other; through the picture that absurdity interlacing with reality and the artistic techniques of symbolism and metaphor, the author reveals the truth of human nature and society.)
