一位名叫圣地亚哥的老渔夫独自在海上捕鱼，一连八十四天毫无收获，终于在第八十五天钓到了一条大鱼。历经两天两夜的缠斗，几乎花光了所有的力气，老人终于战胜了大鱼。可死去的大鱼却吸引来更多的鲨鱼，更加艰难的考验降临到老人的身上......虽然回港时只剩下鱼头鱼尾和一条脊骨，但老人却毫不灰心，并做好了再次出海的准备。
